History

Since 11 April 1920

The Drayton Institute was gifted to the local community on 11th April 1920. Local businessman and philanthropist George Augustus Hill gave the land and along with assistance of a local builder built a parish hall linked to St Andrews Church in honour of the servicemen who lost their lives in WW1.

The Drayton Institute registered as a charity in 1967.

In 1999 The Drayton Institute and The Drayton and Farlington Community Association joined forces and a new era was born. David Higgs led a new board of trustees as Chairman and started the process of creating The Drayton Centre as the secular community centre we know today. In 2012 our current Chairman, George Semmens, would take the reigns from David and continue to modernise and improve the building and its facilities.

Can you help with our story?

Over the years The Drayton Centre (formally known as The Drayton Institute) has provided a place for the local community to meet, learn, celebrate, worship and as a place of support.

A vital part of the community for over 100 years we’d love to hear your stories and see your pictures of the centre over the years. Please contact us if you have stories and photos you’d like to share.

Our Future

We are always working to improve our building and the services we offer.

We’ve increased the activities at the centre, secured funding for improvements to the building and worked on creating better links with other services in the city. Your voice is vital to ensuring we’re providing what the community wants, we’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas. Please contact us with your suggestions.
